I had this surgery 7-8 years ago. A screw that was always loose has now fallen out (it is in my cheek!). Is this common? I am waiting on an X-Ray report right now. How long is the recovery for this to be fixed?

It is not a usual situation. Usually fixation devices do not fall out. However this might happen if the bone remodels in the osteotomy site and the fixation devices might get loose. Anyway it should not have any consequences, your situation might require the removal of all fixation devices (plates and screws) on that side since the bones have already healed long time ago.
