I'm 18 years old and I had braces when I was 13-14. Straight after getting my braces off, I started wearing plates for my top and bottom teeth and have been doing so ever since (but only wearing them at night now). So, if I were to have underbite correction jaw surgery within the next couple of years, would I have to get back onto braces and would I have to wear braces after the surgery as well?

How long do I need for recovery after orthognathic surgery (single jaw surgery)?...Thanks for the answer.

My son age 14, has a front tooth that has never come down into place. He has been wearing braces for approx. 1 1/2 years. Now we need to decide wether or not to try and pull the tooth down into place. Do we see an oral surgeon? His dentist says if we go with a dental implant, he will definitely need a bone graft. Where do I start? Thank you!

Is it possible to go for orthognathic surgery after a year of orthodontic treatment? I would like to know what are the factors that determine a patient is enough for the orthodontic treatment and suitable for the surgery after certain period of orthodontic treatment? Is the occlusion, closure of the spaces in the extraction sites....?

Hi, I'm going to be getting the surgery soon, after I get my braces put on and I was just wondering, will the surgery affect my lip piercing?

I am 14 years old. My teeth are mis-aligned and my canines are just out due to overcrowding. How long do I need to wear braces to correct my upper and lower teeth.

I got braces both as a child and adult. As an adult I wore braces for 2.5 years. Once I got them off I asked him if there is anything more he can do to perfectly correct my overjet bite. He said that because I was an adult braces could only do so much. He also said if I wanted to have a better bite, then I would need to have oral surgery. I was wondering, if the surgery involved wiring the jaw close even if it only involves the upper jaw? Secondly, how long would recovery time be and what kind of soft foods should be eaten since hard foods would not be allowed?

My daughter is 11 and has stage 3 lower jaw - will she need braces, surgery and braces again or can she just get the surgery?

Hi, I'm 15 and I have an underbite. My orthodontist told me I couldn't have surgery till I'm 18 so that my mouth and teeth have fully grown etc. But I'm wondering, would surgery affect my education seeing as I'll be in University probably? Thanks.

I have 95% overbite and 6 mm overjet and as a result, a receded lower jaw. I have no functional problem. But when I bring my lower jaw forward, my facial profile improves a lot. I'm thinking about going for sagital split osteotomy just to improve my facial appearance. I wanted to ask if undergoing surgery could develop any functional problems like inability to chew properly, etc.

I have a deep bite of 7 mm and crowding in lower anteriors... When I consulted an orthodontist he said that my mandible body is small and ramus length is also small, so my question is should I have to undergo a surgery to align my teeth or can it be done through normal orthodontic treatment?

Hi. I'm 19 year-old male, I have a problem with my face, it's asymmetric. When I was 10 years old, I ever had a problem with my jaw, I couldn't close it when I opened it too much but I don't know whether it caused this asymmetric or not. I never wore braces before, should I go for orthognathic surgery? Thanks in advance.

I have class II division overjet. My orthodontist said that even if I want surgery of lower jaw I will have to have first upper premolars removed anyway. I thought for operation people dont get them removed. He said that upper teeth are to far forward thats why. Is it that possible??

I had orthognathic surgery to correct my open bite and extended lower jaw several years ago. I still have some loss of feeling in my chin and lower lip, which on occasion causes me to bite my lower lip when eating or I may spill food or liquid on my chin and not realize it is there. I do have sensation in these areas but it is diminished. Will this continue to improve with time even though it has already been several years or is this the best I can expect it to be for the rest of my life? Also, should I be able to get an MRI with the titanium plates and screws in my jaws?

Hi. I had braces for 4 years all thru HS and my orthodonist recommended jaw correction surgery, but my parents thought it was too major. Now as a 30 yr old adult I would like the surgery. If my teeth are still the same after the orthodonic treatment, would I still need braces for at least a year or longer pre-surgery? Thank you

Hi, I've found your site very helpful, thanks. I have an underbite and considering treatment. They will move lower jaw 6mm back, and top jaw 3mm forward. It's always been in my mind to get it fixed but making the decision is very daunting and finding psychologically trying to guess how I will feel at the end of the surgery and whether I'll recognise myself, or whether I've blown it out of proportion and it won't be as drastic as I'm thinking it will be. I'm wondering if this is how other people felt too.

I'm 15 years old and I'm currently discussing the plans for my procedure, and should be getting braces by January 2011 and I'm a little concerned about how this would affect my school work, and how long I would have to have braces on for altogether. I have been waiting for three years now, and finally he's beginning to do something, however, I've still got a while to go, what information can you give to help decide the risks and benefits about the procedure? Thanks.

I am doing orthognathic surgery on both my upper and lower jaws. I would like to have an idea of the cost for the titanium plates and screws that would be used during surgery.

Hi. I'm 14 year old female who has had braces for 2 and a half years. The bottom jaw is still not in line and have been told to have orthognathic surgery to move the jaw 5mm forward with a possibility of moving the chin 3mm back. The question is this neccessary for 5mm and at 14?

I have a slight protrusion of teeth, and I do not have my upper wisdom tooth, i got them removed 2 years back. I have overcrowding in lower teeth. My dentist does not want me to go for orthodontic treatment, as it would be long she says and the amount of space created by extractions will need to be covered by moving the back teeth forward, this is because my inclination is less and my face profile will be hindered if only my front teeth are moved backwards. But I want to have a perfect smile. What can I do? I dont want to for slicing as it is not advisable. I am 27 years old.

Hello. I am 23 yrs old. I had braces for 6 years when I was younger ( from 9-15) to correct my teeth alignment. Because of being unsure of taking the step toward fixing my underbite through surgery I opted to leave my jaw. It now is causing my headaches and other problems, and visualy my profile bothers me. I am looking into having the surgery done at this point in my life, but am wondering if I would still need to have braces put back on? I was also told when I was younger that my jaw would have to be wired shut, is this still the case? Thanks for any info!

I had this surgery 7-8 years ago. A screw that was always loose has now fallen out (it is in my cheek!). Is this common? I am waiting on an X-Ray report right now. How long is the recovery for this to be fixed?

I'm 17 years old and I've had braces for three years, I'll be getting them off in a month. The orthodontist tried her best to fix my crooked jaw which is slanted right and has caused the right side of my face to also not form as fully as my left- my whole face is very asymmetrical. Do you think I would still need pre and post surgery orthodontics?

Hi, I'm a Malaysian girl, currently undergoing orthodontic treatment for about 3 years. Its longer than usual estimated time frame for presurgery treatment. From the latest impression mould taken, i still couldnt acheive ideal stable bite especially the back molar. Due to overdue treatment length, the surgeon suggest that i could go on with the surgery (with "not so" stable bite) and continue the orthodontic treatment after surgery, then finetuning work leave to the orthodontics. This is contrary to what i learnt about orthognatic surgery. I always thought one should acheive stable bite first before surgery. But surgeon told if i continue braces now, he not sure how much improvement/difference it will make. Does anyone heard about similiar case as mine? I'm a bit hestitate now to go on with the surgery.

What is the approximate cost of orthognathic treatment? It is hard to tell the exact price because there is a wide variety in the extent of treatment. Every case is unique and every patient receives individual treatment plan. The final treatment price is calculated from the orthodontic treatment cost, the price of preparation for the surgery, and the hospital bill. Insurance may cover entire treatment or a part of it depending on the country you are located in.
